When John Zaplatynsky graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BSc, he didn’t know that he’d spend 27 years working as Founder and CEO of a garden centre. Born in Winnipeg and currently located in British Columbia, John expanded that first independent garden centre into seven thriving locations.
“I used to love being with the customers, touching plants and talking to people about them,” he reminisces about those early days.
With 40 years of experience in the Canadian retail and horticultural industries, John has held various leadership positions, most recently as Past President of the International Garden Centre Association – an association of independent garden centres in 20 countries.
John currently serves in the following capacities:
– Director of Pender West Partners, a private equity partnership in Vancouver;
– Director of Premium Brands Holdings, a TSX listed manufacturer and distributor of food products;
– Partner in Social Venture Partners, a Vancouver-based group that funds and mentors start-up not-for-profit community service organizations; and
– Director of Power To Be, a Victoria, B.C. based not-for-profit organization that provides outdoor recreation opportunities for children and youth with disabilities.
Green Cities Foundation is grateful to John for sharing his extensive corporate and not-for-profit Board experience as, together, we work toward the Foundation’s mission.
